When to Engage an Interior Designer in a New Build or Renovation (And Why Earlier Is Better)

Learn when to engage an interior designer during your new build or renovation in Perth, and how early design involvement can save time, reduce stress, and create a more cohesive, high end home from the very beginning.

Discover why engaging an interior designer early in your new build or renovation in Perth can save time, reduce stress, and ensure a cohesive, high end result from the very beginning.

One of the most common things I hear from clients is, “I just wish we'd engaged you earlier.” Not because the end result isn't beautiful, but because the process could have felt so much calmer, clearer, and more considered from the very start.

When an interior designer is engaged early, the entire project takes on a different tone. The home is considered as a whole, not as a series of separate rooms or isolated decisions. Flow, proportion, natural light, storage, furniture placement, and how you will actually live in the space are all thought through from the beginning, rather than being adjusted later.

In practical terms, engaging a designer early means you're not navigating the process alone. It begins with truly understanding how you want to live in your home, not just how you want it to look. How your mornings unfold. How you entertain. How much storage you really need and how each space should feel as you move through it.

From there, I help shape the overall direction of the home, kitchens, bathrooms, wardrobes, joinery, lighting, materials, furniture and finishes are all designed as part of one cohesive story, rather than as a series of separate decisions. It's about seeing the whole picture early, so every choice supports the next.

As the design develops, that vision is translated into clear documentation and detailed selections, giving builders and trades the information they need to price accurately and build with confidence. Joinery is resolved properly, lighting is layered, materials are chosen with longevity in mind, and every space is considered not only for its beauty, but for how it will function day to day.

For many of my clients, particularly busy professionals, the value lies just as much in the experience as in the outcome. Building or renovating is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. There are endless decisions to make, and it's easy to feel like you're constantly reacting rather than being guided.

My role is to lead the process, to anticipate what's coming next, to simplify choices, and to bring clarity and calm to what can otherwise feel like a very complex journey. Instead of trying to visualise everything on your own, or second guess whether a decision will work once all the pieces come together, you're supported by someone who is holding the whole picture and guiding each step with intention.

Most importantly, early design involvement allows your home to be created with purpose. Not rushed. Not compromised. Not pieced together. But thoughtfully considered as the backdrop to your life.

Whether you're planning a new build, a full renovation, or a significant transformation of your home, the beginning of the process sets the tone for everything that follows. The earlier the design thinking is woven in, the more cohesive, functional and beautiful the final result will be.

Because a home is never just about finishes or furniture. It's about how it feels to live there. And that feeling is shaped from the very first decisions.

If you're planning a new build or renovation and would love a calm, considered process guided from the very beginning, I'd love to help.
